Like many people living with HIV in San Francisco, Dale had accepted changes in his appearance as an inevitable part of the disease process. When a friend told him something new was available to help him feel better about how sunken his cheeks were, he was dubious. “I’d heard plenty of stories about one breakthrough or another over the years, but even my HIV specialist wasn’t particularly enthusiastic about any of them.”
His friend insisted he seek treatment with RADIESSE®. “I agreed,” Dale remembers, “but I still didn’t think much would come of it.” An hour after entering the physician’s office, Dale had changed his mind altogether: “I couldn’t believe it. The physician filled in the very areas I would see in the mirror every morning and subconsciously avoid.” Dale’s face looked fuller, fresher, and better rested immediately.
Dale followed up his treatment with dinner in the Castro district with a small group of friends. “A buddy of mine, who has had considerable non-HIV ‘work’ done over the years, couldn’t believe I wasn’t bruised, swollen, or chock full of pain medicine,” Dale said. “He also couldn’t believe the difference in my appearance.” Another friend told Dale that “he looked three inches taller” just walking into the room. “Since I’m not all that tall,” Dale joked, “that comment made me feel better than any of the others!”
“People say ‘You look so good,’ but they really don’t single out the change in my cheeks,” Dale notes. That suits him fine. He’s happy seeing the face he remembers from 10 years ago. “That is plenty for me,” he says, with a big smile.
