Treatment Options for HIV-Associated Facial Lipoatrophy

Facial Lipoatrophy (facial wasting), or the loss of subcutaneous fat in the face, can result in sunken cheeks, hollow eyes, and facial indentations. Until now, treatment options included permanent implants or dermal fillers that requires multiple office visits to achieve long-term results. RADIESSE dermal filler has proven to be an ideal treatment option for patients with HIV-associated Facial Lipoatrophy because it has proven to be a safe, convenient treatment that provides both immediate and long-lasting natural facial restoration.

A recently published, open-label, 18-month trial of RADIESSE filler in patients with HIV-associated Facial Lipoatrophy determined that RADIESSE filler is both safe and effective (Silvers SL, Eviatar JA, Echavez MI, Pappas AL). One hundred subjects (94 men and 6 women) were enrolled in the study that compared the changes from a patients' baseline using Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS), with confirmation using standardized photography through an 18 month period. The study used GAIS with confirmation using standardized photography.

Key Findings

CONCLUSIONS: RADIESSE dermal filler is an appropriate and well-tolerated treatment for the effects of facial lipoatrophy (facial wasting) — including sunken cheeks and facial indentations. It demonstrates an excellent safety profile, causes immediate augmentation of the soft tissues, and provides long-lasting improvement in appearance, with very high patient satisfaction.
